Paper Ferrari and BAR

These models were built in 2002 from plans drawn up by Yasu Tanaka. I found the plans after completing a 1:10 scale model F1 car as part of a pitch to Vodafone. They were looking for examples of graphic applications of their logo on the car. Design delays and reverts only allowed us just over two days to complete the prototype.

The design called for many layers of airbrushed vignettes which required masking in fresh paint. The deadline didn't allow for the time required for the paint to cure so an alternative had to be found. We eventually decided (at 2am on the morning before the deadline) to print the graphics on glossy media and carefully apply the graphics to the car. The result was spectacular.

A few days later we discussed the possibility of making the car entirely from glossy paper. Before drawing up the car ourselves I decided to see if anyone had tried it before and thus found Yasu Tanakas page The base for the BAR is my own design, drop me an email if you would like me to send you the files for use to display your own models.

YAK 54 cockpit detail

Once I had completed the maiden flight on my 30cc radio control YAK a friend sent me some fantastic photos he had taken on the day. The plane looked great but one thing was conspicuous in its absence. The cockpit detail. I set about drawing up the details of the bracing tubes and other details based on photographs and other reference diagrams. More…
